The Genius of Tim Burton

Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, the Batman series – what do all these movies have in common? How about the director? Tim Burton is the master of all these movies and many more. Tim Burton is a unique Hollywood director known for his movies resembling the old film noir. Tim Burton is known for using recurring collaborators on his works, among which Johnny Depp and domestic partner Helena Bonham Carter.

In the recent history of film, few people have actually created something so original that it could affect the whole industry. Tim Burton has produced an outstanding amount of films that bring up the question, is Tim Burton one of these people? Could he be just an average, filmmaker that has convinced everyone he is great, or is he the brilliant visual artist, who uses his talents to create great movies?

Perhaps the masterpiece of Tim Burton is Edward Scissorhands. It was his first well-received films, serving as an excellent example of his distinctive vision. The disparity between the horror movie sensibility of Tim Burton and his mundane suburban upbringing in Burbank is even conveyed in the movie. This strange character is, symbolically at least, Burton himself. Edward is nothing less than Burton’s spiritual autobiography, a fairy tale of the otherness felt by every outsides. With this movie, Tim Burton has reached a high point of poetic lyricism that is all the more remarkable when viewed against the brutality and literalness which characterizes many offerings in the contemporary cinema.

Tim Burton has also made the first full length stop motion animated movie produced by Disney, Nightmare before Christmas. The animation itself is a technical marvel. The characters are so expressive. Apparently, the character of Jack had 150 interchangeable heads to give him a range of emotions. Nightmare is a delightful movie, equally entertaining for children and adults alike. Tim Burton is certainly a director who has made a powerful impact on the movie industry, and whose films are so special in their childlike reverie and cathartic blend of horror and black humor.
